Fastest, Highest, Strongest!

What does our essential understanding for track and field mean?

Oi Grade 6's!

After participating in various activities to practice and develop our track and field skills, comment on our enduring understanding - what does it mean? Use the essential questions to help guide your answer.

Enduring Understanding
  • Athletes' decisions and actions affect their performance in different track and field events
Essential Questions
  • What are track and field events?
  • What movement skills are needed to be successful in different events?
  • What is the objective in track and field events?
  • What are athletes' responsibilities?
  • How can the skills and attitudes learned in track and field events be used in other sports and activities?

  1. I think that the athletes's decisions and actions does affect their performance in different track and field events because every step you make you need to decide weather you step forward or backwards or to the left or to the right. So if you don't decide where to step you won't move and won't win. Also the actions they take can also affect their performance because if they decide to do something against their opponent, than they can be disqualified.

    1. Gabi, I totally agree with you that athlete's decisions and actions affect their performance. I also think that the speed and the power you use will affect your performance. For javelin throw, for example, you have to use your maximum force to throw it to a long distance. Another example is for long distance running, you can't run to fast or else you won't be able to finish the race. For this sport in track and field you need to control your speed. For all the reasons mentioned above, athlete's actions and decisions do affect their performance not only in track and field, but in other sports.

    2. I also think that the athlete's decisions affect their performance while practicing and outside. This also relates to our health unit because if you're eating junk food before practices or before races you will not be at your maximum capacity. This will also affect your stamina, reaction time, and your speed. These are all main components of Track and Field events.
